Africa faces a critical challenge with electronic waste (e-waste), projected to reach 2.2 million tonnes annually by 2030. Currently, the continent recycles only about 4% of its total waste, with over 90% ending up in uncontrolled dumpsites, leading to severe environmental contamination and public health risks.
Kenya alone generates 51.3 metric tons of e-waste annually, yet only 1% is formally recycled, leaving hazardous materials to contaminate ecosystems and threaten public health. Communities near waste sites face disproportionate health risks from exposure to toxins, exacerbating inequalities.
